[Playstation Network] 1942: Joint Strike takes inspiration and influence from the 194X series of World War II-themed vertical shooters. The art, sound, and gameplay of the new game takes cues from the original 194X games, but stands out as its own unique entry. Gameplay resembles the classic 2D style that gamers expect, but the game utilizes a full 3D engine. Set in a World War II-themed locale, stages, vehicles, and weapons have the look and feel of WWII with some stylistic differences. The world in which 1942 takes place is not our own and the events that transpire are not historically accurate, nor are they intended to be. This is an alternate world where history and technology developed along their own paths. As a result, players jump into the cockpits of WWII-era aircraft to take on huge waves of incoming enemy fire, dodging explosions and missiles while challenging huge bosses at the end of each stage. New co-op "Joint Strike attacks" combine the powers of two aircrafts into a devastating barrage. [Capcom]

Joint Strike is a great way to kill a short period of time...just like an arcade game should be.

A game that's just as enjoyable as any other in the series but with a wow factor that far exceeds the vast majority of them. [July 2008, p.123]

ZTGameDomain
The game's appearance combined with solid controls and generally tight feeling of the game make it more than an old remake, and evidence the success of a less direct tribute.

Suffice it to say, 1942: Joint Strike is a fun diversion for those who aren't accustomed to the ins and outs of vertical shoot-em-ups and a great throwback for those who are. What it lacks in techno music, vector graphics, or shtick, it more than makes up for with a solid experience that can be enjoyed singly or cooperatively.

1942: Joint Strike is a solid, but short update to the 1942 series. The inclusion of online co-operative play is a nice addition that works well.

If it weren't for the highly enjoyable multiplayer, we would have to rate this with a "Skip It." But it really isn't all that bad. Check out the demo of the game beforehand.

The core gameplay - established by the first game - is still here and shines. Joint Strike's short length is bolstered by its difficulty, but it's hard to see gamers coming back for repeated solo player; co-op is the most impressive feature of this update.

1942: Joint Strike is the kind of game that will have you very excited for about an hour. It looks great, it's accessible, and it's fun. But come back on day two or day three and you'll probably be eyeing other games on your hard drive to play.

Sure, it's not the deepest of shooters, but for $10, you could do a lot worse than 1942.

If you’re one of those gamers who has a blast playing co-op, then Joint Strike is probably for you. If you're hoping to head through Joint Strike solo, however, you'll undoubtedly be disappointed.

Giant Bomb
A good, solid scrolling shooter. It's tough, but not so tough that it will only appeal to genre crazies who can only feel emotion when it's filtered through a bullet hell pattern.

Shoot'em up purists won't be deterred by these issues as "Joint Strike" does have something to offer, especially when playing with a partner. But for most gamers, who after buying the game have already put their 40 quarters on the arcade cabinet glass, some continues should have been included.

As a title that doesn't stand out in any particular category other than nostalgia, 1942 still holds up well as the shooter it is.

It's nothing you haven't seen before, though, and, placed next to the stylish brilliance of "Everyday Shooter," this ultimately lacks the character or variety to make its challenge worth enduring. [Aug 2008, p.81]

Boomtown
It is this shortness of experience and relatively shallow gameplay that makes it difficult to see why it is worth the £6.99 asking price, comparing it to many of the other titles available on the PlayStation Network.

Todd K gave it an8:
If you were a fan of the 80s original arcade game, you will love this new upgrade. It is super fun in short bursts trying to get new high scores. And for only $10 bucks you can't go wrong.

William K. gave it an8:
This game does a good job of staying true to the original material while adding 3D an other features like co-op and new weapons to bring it up to date with the times.
